Workshops (1/2 day) offered by Barichara's artists

For your next stay in Barichara, we propose to introduce you to the art and local craft techniques. This unique experience takes place directly in the artists' workshops*. During this more intimate encounter with the most beautiful village of Colombia, you will discover Barichara through the life and work of its artists and artisans.

The activity program is organized according to the availability of artists and craftsmen. The workshops have a duration of 2 to 4 hours and take place in the morning or afternoon. Prices vary depending on the number of participants. The best price is obtained from 3 people. We invite you to form a group and enjoy this adventure in Barichara.

NIRKO ANDRADE

Indigenous traditional weaving

Graduated from the School of Fine Arts of the National University, Nirko has spend the last 30 years studying and preserving indigenous weaving techniques. In the village of Guane, ancestral land of weavers, Nirko built his museum, a place for the preservation and teaching of these techniques, open to those who wish to learn raditional weaving of bags and hammocks.

Hats in natural fibers

Eugenia is among the few who still practice this ancient craft, transforming natural fibers such as rush, nacuma or banana bark into beautiful hats. Hat weaving was once a very common craft in the region of Santander. Eugenia learned with Doña Eugenia Vargas Helena and is now in charge of passing on this knowledge to future generations.

Raku

Jimena and Jaime have been creating utilitarian and artistic handmade objects for over 20 years. The Raku course is divided into two sessions: glazing and firing. Each participant will hand-glaze 3 objects using different application techniques and, once dry, place them in the oven and partake in the firing process. With Raku technique, the clay, the glazes and the fire combine into surprising results.

With Angelica Vanegas, a graduate and professor at the School of Crafts Santo Domingo de Bogota, you will discover the basic principles of jewel design and techniques for creating accessories such as bracelets and necklaces. You can explore the techniques of permeated wood, beaten silver and laminated copper, together with the basics of gemology.

YASMITH BELTRÁN

Drawing

Yasmith is an artist, and the founder - together with Carlos Santamaría - of Añil Gallery. This drawing course invites pupils to contemplate Barichara through a set of exercises of different rhythms which aim to open our eyes and create compositions of various spaces. You will learn to use charcoal crayons and a viewfinder, which is a basic tool used in composition.

Collage

The course aims to develop a collage exercise based on the composition of a portrait from scraps of printed images pasted on a cardboard backing on which there is already the sketch of a face. MARCELA CARRASCO

Weaving whit recycled materials

Marcela Carrasco is a born weaver and teacher. For 20 years she has been leading weaving workshops and creating products made of recycled materials with an ecological focus. During this course, you will work on a traditional loom with materials that are typical of the region, such sisal and cotton, combined with newspaper, plastic bags and packaging to explore how to combine ancient crafts with contemporary language.

Nathalie’s memories and heart are profoundly linked to paper. She grew up expressing herself through this material, molding it into different shapes. Bahareque construction

Nohra learned the craft of natural building whilst working for six years with Jose Raul Moreno (specialist in earth construction). Bahareque is one of the most humble and ancient building techniques of this region very common in country homes. This fun and educational workshop is especially designed for children so they can discover one of the oldest ways to build a house.

Vicente was born in Barichara in a family of carpenters, although he later moved on to wood sculpture, creating unique pieces from rustic trunks. The workshop offers insight into a traditional craft, an introduction to different kinds of local wood and the tools used in wood carving. And if you wish, Vicente will also give you an insight into Barichara’s past.

Marta is an architect and watercolor artist. Her work shows us brilliant flashes of colors produced by a drop of water through the light. Her workshop will explore the technique of painting outdoors with watercolor whilst contemplating the most picturesque sites in Barichara.

Experimental jewelry

Jenny Ramirez explores spatial and sensorial processes applied to jewelry. She uses materials with personal meaning to highlight the expression of a concept.
